To achieve high structural strength with minimal material use, channel bar is employed. It is capable of withstanding large axial loads and bending loads. In addition to standard use of channel bar in metal structures, it can also be used as a guide for lifting devices, and as ramps for wheelchairs and trolleys.
Channel bar is manufactured by hot rolling as well as by bending.
Hot-rolled channel bar
Produced by the hot rolling method on special equipment by drawing prepared heated metal through dies. Advantage – capable of withstanding heavy loads.
In addition to channel bar used in construction, there are types of channel bar for various fields of application, for example: automotive industry, railcar manufacturing, and others.
The main parameters characterizing the properties of channel bar are: height, width and flange thickness, web thickness, cross-sectional area, moment and radius of inertia, and section modulus. The height of the channel bar determines its nominal number and area of application, as well as its type:
U-shaped (parallel flange) and tapered flange channel.
U-shaped (parallel flange) channel is characterized by parallel flange faces.Tapered flange channel – with opposing flanges inclined from 4% to 10%.
Bent channel bar
Manufactured on tube mills from coiled steel (hot-rolled and cold-rolled). They are also classified by numbers indicating the distance between flanges (in mm). Bent channel bars can be equal-flange and unequal-flange (different flange heights). Bent channel bar is used for concealing utilities and as guides in moving structures. The main advantage of bent channel bar is its weight, but it is inferior to hot-rolled channel bar in load tests. Visually, bent channel bar differs from hot-rolled by its rounded outer corner.

1. Can I buy a 6-metre channel section or another length?
No. Channel sections are supplied from the factory only in 12-metre lengths. Shorter options, including 6-metre lengths, are not produced.
2. Where are channel sections used?
They are mainly used in industrial construction: for reinforcing steel structures, strengthening arches and floor slabs, and installing runway beams for overhead cranes.
3. Which channel section is required for a crane runway beam?
Standard channel sections in sizes 16, 18 and 20 are commonly used.
4. Can a channel section be used in a private house?
Yes. It is most often used to reinforce door openings so that it can support the weight of the wall above. However, channel section is generally considered an industrial structural profile.
5. Is the channel section manufactured according to GOST or EN, and where is it supplied from?
