Wire rod is in demand for the manufacture of mesh structures, metal gratings, and as construction reinforcement. Small-sized products are suitable for packaging. The primary factor determining the technical parameters of wire rod is the raw material.
Wire rod is produced on rolling mills by two methods: rolling and drawing. First, a square billet is fed into the rolls of the rolling mill. Then the process of compressing the steel billet begins, giving it a round cross-section of the required diameter.
Wire rod with various levels of properties and qualities is used in different areas of production, which only increases its significance in manufacturing and on the global rolled metal market.
Most commonly, steel wire rod is used in the reinforcement of monolithic concrete structures. For example, in the manufacture of reinforcement cages, prefabricated stirrups — square, round, or rectangular in shape — are made directly from wire rod. In addition to its use in reinforcement cages, wire rod is also used in the manufacture of welded reinforcement mesh with a cell size of 100×100 or 150×100 mm.
Reinforcement mesh is used for reinforcing monolithic surfaces such as concrete floors, inter-floor slabs, and screeds. Wire rod is also used as raw material for the production of wire products. Wire rod intended for wire production is additionally cleaned of scale before processing.

1. What is wire rod and what is it used for in construction?
Wire rod is a smooth, round rolled steel product with a diameter of 5.5 mm, classified as A240. In construction, it is used to tie and secure reinforcement cages made from B500C and B500B reinforcing bars, both transversely and longitudinally.
2. What is the difference between wire rod and round bar?
They are the same general type of smooth round rolled steel product, but with different diameters. Wire rod usually has a diameter of 5.5 mm, while round bar is supplied in larger diameters, such as 8 or 10 mm. The larger the diameter, the more suitable it is for tying heavier and more massive structures.
3. Which should I choose: wire rod or round bar?
The choice depends on the required diameter, the intended application and the weight of the structure. For most standard applications, 5.5 mm wire rod is suitable in around 90% of cases. For heavy-duty and industrial structures, 8 or 10 mm round bar is used.
